Let’s Talk Politics! Legally Managing Political Expression in an Election Year

We all have different views, but we can probably agree on one thing: nothing polarizes more than politics. Election years make workplace political chatter inevitable – even more so as the U.S. workforce transitions to a virtual work environment amid COVID-19 and employees continue to express themselves online. Discussions at work about politics can implicate various legal rules related to freedom of expression, civility of discourse, claims of protected concerted activity, retaliation, and more. The need to balance individual expression against a safe and productive work environment is crucial. So how do we accomplish that? Join us for a discussion about policies and practices that can help us foster a positive workplace culture and steps that can be taken should challenges arise.

What you will learn

  • Gain a working knowledge of the laws that may be implicated when employees engage in political activity.
  • Understand best practices for compliance with politics-related workplace rules and regulations.
  • Develop ways to communicate with employees who fail to meet expectations or engage in disruptive behavior.
  • Consider strategies for addressing workplace political issues before they arise.
  • Evaluate how to respect varying political views in the workplace while maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Prepare for how to address workplace disputes that relate to politics.
